Girls and Other Events

One of these days I'm going to use my 'real' camera to take a picture of Abby, and then maybe it won't be blurry.  She doesn't hold still very well (go figure).

When Annie was a baby her cheeks were so round that her tears would just sit on her face until they dried.  We found it amusing.  Abby had the same thing going on the other day, so I tried to take a picture.

We spent last weekend at my in-laws.  We're so excited that they've finally moved out here!  Elisa held Abby for me while we helped move boxes around, and she fell asleep.  Sweet baby.

Annie wanted to try mousse in her hair the other day.  She thought she looked just like me.  :)

It looked better when it dried, but then it just got messier and messier throughout the day.  Conclusion: she's not ready for mousse.

Abby was being cute and wiggly yet again.

Our clothes dryer is at the end of its life.  I couldn't get it to start, so we extended our laundry room into the spare bedroom.  Today I managed to get it to run with very small loads.  The motor is dying.  :(  I guess we get to go shopping.

Family Update

Yesterday I sent a family update via e-mail to family and friends, and since I connect with so many through blogging I thought I'd share it here as well.

Dear Family and Friends,

2013 was an eventful year for our family!  Our sweet little Abigail was born in April and has been a constant joy.  In July and August we went through the stressful experience of selling our house and relocating so we could be closer to Jim's employment.  He'd been commuting an hour each way for the previous two years.  We rented a house initially, then in October bought our newest home.  November was consumed in house repair because our new house needed some major work, and we finally move in the week of Thanksgiving.  It's been a whirlwind in some ways!

Jim's job here with John Deere has continued to be a huge blessing.  He enjoys his work, has a wonderful team/ manager, and the company is so good to us.  We are very grateful for such good employment.  It has been wonderful living closer to work as well.  Jim is relieved over the shorter drive, and we enjoy the extra time with him.  Jim is serving as Cub Master in our ward right now and is enjoying the chance to work with the boys.  He's never served in Cubs before so this is a new experience for him.  The other leaders tell me that he is awesome with the boys.  I can believe it; he really has a way with kids.

I have been keeping busy with the kids and home.  I'm relieved that our big house projects are finished (for now) and that we don't have another move coming up.  If I could have it my way, we'd never move again!  (Dreams do come true sometimes...)  I'm grateful for all that we've been through, though.  Our new house is a century old farm house just outside of town set on three acres and surrounded by farmland.  It's beautiful and so peaceful here.  Before we moved in, we painted the entire interior of the house, replaced all the carpet, installed a completely new HVAC system, and SCRUBBED way too many hours.  In short, the house was extremely filthy when we bought it.  Otherwise it's a great house.  Our closest neighbors have been so friendly and welcoming.  They even plowed our long driveway for us when we were snowed in (they own a snowplow company)!   I'm really enjoying our new ward here; the women have made me feel welcome and included in so many ways.  I am so grateful for them.  They have really lifted my spirits during stressful times in these short months.  I'm currently serving as the Primary pianist which is so fun because I get to watch my kids in Primary; I love playing the piano too.

Logan, age 7, seems to be reaching a new level of awareness and ability.  He spends most of his time reading and is starting to surpass us in his understanding of certain things.  I find it really amusing when he uses new words that he's learned in his books.  One day he approached me and told me about the 'hoar frost' outside.  I knew the term, but Jim had never heard it.  The best part was that he was entirely correct!  He mixes up the meanings of the things he reads sometimes and has said some pretty funny things as a result, too!  We can always tell he's thinking, though.  He's become really enthusiastic about LEGOs this year and has pulled his younger siblings in with him.  They spend hours creating things.  For Christmas, Logan received giftcards to the LEGO store.  We took a weekend trip to Minneapolis and included that as a stop.  He used his gift money to buy white LEGOs so he could build temples.  What a kid!  Logan is such a strength to our family.  He is a hard worker and helps me a lot with his siblings and around the house.  He has a testimony and is excited to be baptized this year; he already has it all planned out even though it's months away.

Annie, age 5, always seems to be just behind her big brother, but she's super independent too.  She has taken off with reading this year, and spends hours every day in her books.  She particularly enjoys reading out loud, so Alex is usually right next to her listening.  We've also been seeing a great tendency with her to aim for perfection in the things she does.  At times that is frustrating for all of us because she gets upset when she doesn't perform as she wishes (i.e. writing, drawing, comprehending).  She also has a very quick intellect, and gets impatient easily as a result.  All this makes for a motivated and bright little girl!  She continues to show us how very feminine she is in the things she is interested and concerned with.  I asked her one day recently if she liked clothes or toys better, and her response was that she likes them equally.  She usually has a dress up dress over her clothes and loves to feel pretty.  We gave her a fancy dress for Christmas instead of a toy and she wasn't a bit disappointed.  She is a very tender and sweet little person.  She blesses our family so much with her sweet nature.

Alex is my little fireball.  At three years old he is discovering so many abilities and testing how much control he has over his world.  He is extremely stubborn and sweet at the same time.  He loves to sit on our laps, and he's usually on his teacher's lap at church.  He's so affectionate that way.  I haven't been doing anything academic with him this year, but I keep discovering that his siblings have taught him things like counting or less typical colors (he asked me for something 'peach' the other day...).  He is following our family pattern of loving books.  He actually won't sleep without at least twenty books in his bed.  Usually he has more.  He has entered the question phase too.  He asks a lot of questions, or else makes statements and follows up with, "Is that right?"  He wants to do everything that Annie and Logan do.  Thankfully they include him most of the time, but when they don't he turns into a human wrecking ball.  He is the very definition of 'rough and tumble boy'.  Alex also continues to be our family comedian.  He is so funny and has the most infectious laugh.

Abby will be nine months old on Sunday, and I can't believe it!  She is the sweetest little thing, and is so content.  All she wants is to be around people.  She'll sit on the floor and happily watch everyone or play with toys for hours.  She smiles at strangers and even lets them hold her!  I've spent so much time just enjoying her this year.  She's on the verge of crawling and I'm not sure I'm ready for that!  I love this cuddly content phase so much!  It's fun to watch her personality emerge.  She squeals and giggles when she's watching her siblings, when I turn on the bath, or when she sees that it's time to eat.  She LOVES her big brothers and sister and they love her back.  It's so neat to watch how they gently care for her and play with her.  She is just happy...all...the...time.  The only things she doesn't like are shoes and hats; she's good at removing both.  :)

I hope everyone is doing well!

Our New Membership

For Christmas my sister gave us a membership to our local children's pavilion, such a good idea!  We were excited to use it, so on Jim's last vacation day we made it a family outing.

They were so funny putting on a play for us.

The projects in the art room were fun so we spent quite a bit of time in there.

Abby really enjoyed herself.  There were buckets of blocks all over the place; she thought unloading them was the best thing ever.

Cabin Fever

We had some crazy cold days this week (I heard -50 with windchill) so we stayed indoors and didn't go anywhere for a few days.  It finally warmed up enough to go outside and the kids were thrilled.  They played in the snow for hours.

The snowplow made a big pile at the top of our driveway.  The kids loved that.

I love how cute they are with their pink cheeks when they come in.

Bathroom Mini Remodel

One of the things we still wanted to do to our house when we moved in was fix up our main floor bathroom, but we didn't have the budget to do a major remodel on it.  The problem with it was that the sink cabinet was completely rotted out, the walls were gross and damaged, and the carpet on the floor was gross.  This picture is what it looked like before, though you can't see how nasty it was.

A full remodel would require tearing down the paneled walls, removing the drop ceiling, repairing or removing the plaster underneath (which could mean sheetrocking), painting, moving the tub, toilet, and sink for better clearance, adding a shower, putting in new flooring, installing a new light, and a new sink/ cabinet.  Someday we hope to do all that.  We have bigger fish to fry before we're at that point, though, so we decided the mini remodel was a good idea in order to have a truly clean bathroom.

Jim removed the old sink, cabinet, and carpet so I could paint.  We decided to paint over the paneling because the plaster underneath was covered in old glue and seemed like it might be in bad shape.  I did a primer coat over everything including the floor.

Our goal was to clean up the bathroom for as little as possible, so I used leftover paint.

Jim removed the toilet (which, thankfully, was brand spanking new when we bought the house...we have some theories on why that is) in order to lay the floor nicely.  We used inexpensive vinyl tiles for this to save cost and because it was easy.

We bought an inexpensive cabinet that came with a sink and also a new faucet.  Jim installed those and then we cleaned up our mess. Voila!  It's still an ugly bathroom and there's a tight squeeze to get to the toilet, but it's totally clean and functional!

A New Year

Jim used his remaining vacation days after the new year so we had some time at home with him.

His parents arrived back in town in order to close on their new house and they brought a few Christmas presents with them.  They brought Jim this head massage thing which was totally awesome because he's been wanting one, but they didn't know it.

Alex had some chocolate one morning.  I love that little boy face.

Annie insisted on her picture the same morning.  She's looking fresh out of bed.

One day we had a south wind blow a 2 foot deep drift all over our long driveway.  We were snowed in without a storm!  Thankfully, after the wind changed directions the next day, our neighbor who owns a snowplow company cleared it for us.  We're thankful for kind neighbors!

We had one final Christmas-ey activity for family home evening this week.  We put together a gingerbread train.

The kids had fun decorating it.

Abby is a good eater and loves her cup.  Aside from prunes, we've moved her straight onto soft table foods.  She's loving it, and I do too.  I never actually had to make her any baby food or buy any except for the starter cereal and prunes.  It's funny (and nice) how things change with each baby.

New Year's Eve

On New Year's Eve we had a family over to play games.  We were doubtful that any of us would want to stay up until midnight so we just said we'd play and visit until everyone was tired.  So we were rather surprised that we played games until 1am!  None of the kids were cranky and the babies slept almost the whole time too.

We played a few family games at the start.  We had two candy bars so we could play the candy bar game again.  It was a new one for their family and it was a hit.

Later we played Telestrations and then the kids split off for their own games/ play and the adults played some other games.

Annie and Logan were excited to have these particular friends over; they've been asking to do this for a while.

Finally when they were getting ready to go Alex fell asleep on the couch.  (Jim is awake here; he just blinked.)

We had a fun visit and it was nice to get to know their family a little more!

End of Grandma's Visit

The last couple of days with my mom we stayed home.  We were pretty tired from our little trip, but we still got up early for church the next day.  The girls were cute in their new dresses.

We didn't have time to take a picture before church so we attempted a photo at church.  This is the best we managed because Abby wasn't having it.

We tried again when we arrived home and had slightly better luck.

That night we played the candy bar game.  It'd been a couple of years since we'd played it so it was an exciting novelty for the kids.  They LOVED it, and Alex managed to eat almost half of the candy bar himself.

After that they finally opened their new LEGOs.

Logan and Annie built several temples over the course of the evening and the following days.

Jim and Abby relaxed while we visited.

Some final cuddle time with Grandma.

We'll miss you mom!
