We had some pretty crazy storms at the end of June complete with tornado warnings. Our house was right in the middle of some of these storms, so we had to retreat to our dungeon (AKA our old, unfinished basement) a few times. Our version of a storm cellar is an old bed set up on wood planks down there.
The first time we were grateful for that old bed was late at night. Jim and I debated about waking the kids, but once we saw the green tornado sky (no joke!) we decided we'd better not leave our little people on the top floor of our tall house. They thought it was fun to get out of bed and hang out in the basement.
The next day, we had to spend some time there again because of another storm. This time I was alone with the kids, the basement was completely flooded, AND the power went out. So we sat in the dark on our 'raft' that thankfully wasn't quite floating; those wood planks were a good idea! (No electricity meant the sump pump couldn't operate.)
